About this tool

Uncompressed BMPs and modern WebP compression are on opposite ends of the file-size spectrum, which makes this a particularly effective conversion. Photographic BMPs can drop from tens of megabytes down to a fraction of that as WebP, with quality most people cannot distinguish from the original. The browser decodes the BMP locally, encodes it as WebP, and hands the result back — no upload required. Standard BMPs have no transparency, so the WebP output is opaque. Convert one file at a time, up to about 25MB per run.

FAQ

More about this tool

How it works

  1. Pick a BMP file from your device.
  2. The browser decodes the bitmap and encodes it as WebP.
  3. Download the WebP file when the conversion completes.

Features

  • Dramatic size savings — Uncompressed BMPs shrink sharply when saved as WebP.
  • Web-first output — WebP is well-supported across modern browsers and CDNs.
  • Opaque result — Standard BMPs carry no alpha, so the WebP stays fully opaque.
  • Lossy by default — The compression tuning is chosen to keep photos looking natural.
  • Local conversion — The BMP is processed entirely in your browser.

Supported formats

Input: BMP. Output: WebP.

Common uses

  • Publishing legacy imagery — Bring BMP-era photos into a modern site without inflating page weight.
  • Bulk archive compression — Cut storage costs for large BMP archives by moving to WebP.
  • Mobile-friendly sharing — Send images that would otherwise be too large as raw BMP.

Limitations

  • Very old browsers may not display WebP.
  • WebP encoding is lossy by default.
  • Files above ~25MB may need to be reduced first.
  • Not intended for pixel-perfect archival of technical bitmaps.
