What compression means here
Image compression re-encodes JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF with modes such as balanced, maximum quality, smallest file, or a target size. Size-target pages aim for a rough KB or MB ceiling; results are approximate, not exact to the byte.
PDF compression re-encodes pages as images to reduce weight. That often removes selectable text and vector sharpness. It is the right choice when a visual PDF for email or upload matters more than editable text.
When to use compression
Use compression when the format is already accepted but the file is too large — passport photo caps, government form limits, mailbox quotas, messaging apps, or CMS uploads.
If a portal rejects the extension itself (for example it wants JPG and you have PNG), convert first, then compress if the result is still oversized.
Common workflows
- Hit a stated size limit — Open a size landing such as Compress Image to 100KB or Compress PDF to 1MB, or use the parent tool with a target size mode.
- Prepare a photo for a form — Crop and compose the photo elsewhere if the form requires it, then use a passport, visa, or government-forms compression page for a soft KB goal.

- General shrink without a number — Use Compress Image or Compress PDF and pick balanced or maximum compression, then check the preview and savings.
Best practices
- Read the tool page for the real trade-off. Aggressive image targets and PDF page re-encoding can look soft or remove selectable text.
- Crop or resize oversized sources before chasing tiny KB targets. A huge panorama may never reach 10–20 KB cleanly.
- For PDFs, unlock password-protected files first. Passworded PDFs are not supported.
- PDF compression is capped around 40 pages to protect browser memory. Split very long documents first if needed.
- Platform landings (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and similar) prepare a smaller file on your device. They do not post or upload to those services for you.
