Overview

Conversion on Konvert means taking a file you already have and producing a different format without installing software. Open a tool, add a file, and download the result. Most jobs run in your browser so the file stays on your device.

What conversion means here

A conversion tool maps one input format to one output format — for example JPG to PNG, PDF to JPG, or Word to PDF. It does not shrink a file for a size limit (that is compression) and it does not crop or merge pages (that is editing).

Image converters re-encode pixels between formats. PDF and Word tools follow the limits of the shared PDF conversion engine: image↔PDF paths rasterize or wrap pages; Word paths are text-focused.

When to use conversion

Use conversion when a site, app, printer, or teammate rejects the format you have. Typical cases: a portal that only accepts JPG, a design tool that prefers PNG, a WebP download that will not open in older software, or a .docx that needs to be sent as PDF.

If the file opens fine but is too large to upload, start with Compression instead. If you need a still frame from an animated GIF, convert it knowing animation is not preserved.

Common workflows

  • Photo to a required upload type — Convert JPG↔PNG or WebP↔JPG, then download and submit through the form that asked for that extension.
  • Modern web format to a compatible still — Turn AVIF or WebP into JPG or PNG when an editor or portal cannot open the source.
  • PDF pages as images — Use PDF to JPG, PNG, or WebP when you need page previews, slides, or image attachments.
  • Word and PDF text handoff — Word to PDF builds a readable PDF from .docx text. PDF to Word extracts text into .docx when a text layer exists — it is not OCR.

Best practices

  • Start from the highest-quality source you have. Conversion cannot restore detail a lossy format already discarded.
  • Expect transparency to disappear when the output is JPG or JPEG. PNG and WebP can keep alpha when the source had it.
  • Animated GIFs become a single frame on image conversion tools. Export a still on purpose; do not expect motion.
  • For Word and PDF, read the tool’s limitations before you start. Complex layouts and scanned PDFs without text are limited.
  • Stay under about 25 MB per file. Very large images or long PDFs may hit browser memory limits.

Privacy

Conversion tools on Konvert process files on your device when the page says on-device. Files are not uploaded for those tools.
