About this tool
PNG is the natural still-image counterpart to GIF: both are lossless, both can carry transparency, and both handle flat graphics well. This converter takes a GIF and writes a PNG copy of a single frame, which is useful when you want a crisp still without dithering artifacts or when a workflow expects PNG rather than GIF. Because PNG has no notion of multiple frames in this pipeline, animated GIFs lose their animation — only one frame is exported. Transparency is preserved. Everything runs locally on-device, one file at a time, up to about 25MB.
FAQ
No. Only a single frame is exported; PNG output here is a still image.
Yes. PNG supports the same style of transparency as GIF.
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.
PNG is a modern, well-supported still format that plays more nicely with today's design tools.
More about this tool
How it works
- Load a GIF file into the converter.
- The browser reads a single frame and encodes it losslessly as PNG.
- Download the PNG file, transparency intact.
Features
- Transparency preserved — Transparent GIF pixels remain transparent in the PNG.
- Lossless encoding — The exported PNG is a pixel-accurate copy of the chosen frame.
- Animation not carried — Only a single frame is written to the PNG; animated GIFs are collapsed.
- Great for flat graphics — PNG handles GIF-style palettes and hard edges cleanly.
- On-device — The GIF is never uploaded to a remote server.
Supported formats
Input: GIF (single-frame export). Output: PNG (transparency preserved).
Input
-
GIF gif
Output
-
PNG png
Common uses
- Extracting a still — Grab a single sharp frame from an animated GIF to use as a static image.
- Modernising GIF logos — Store older GIF-based logos as PNG so they integrate better with modern design tools.
- Screen captures — Convert screen-recording GIFs into a still PNG for documentation.
Limitations
- Animation is not exported.
- GIF's original palette (often 256 colors) still limits the source's color range.
- PNG output is larger than the original GIF in many cases.
- One file at a time, up to roughly 25MB.
