About this tool

PNGs with transparent backgrounds are a mainstay of the web, but they can be surprisingly heavy. WebP was designed as a modern replacement that supports alpha transparency and usually produces smaller files. This converter re-encodes a PNG into WebP right in your browser, so overlays, logos, and cut-out product shots can stay transparent while shedding weight. Because the browser drives the encode, no data is sent to a server. It works on one image at a time up to roughly 25MB, which comfortably covers most PNG assets used on marketing pages and apps.

FAQ

More about this tool

How it works

  1. Drop a PNG file into the converter or select it from your device.
  2. The browser decodes the PNG and encodes it into WebP, keeping any alpha channel.
  3. Download the WebP result when it appears.

Features

  • Alpha channel preserved — Transparent PNG regions carry through into the WebP output.
  • Meaningful size drop — Most PNGs, especially detailed ones, become substantially smaller as WebP.
  • Web-ready format — WebP is supported across major modern browsers.
  • Local processing — Nothing leaves your device during conversion.
  • Simple one-file flow — Convert a single PNG at a time, up to about 25MB.

Supported formats

Input: PNG. Output: WebP (transparency preserved).

Common uses

  • Lighter cut-out product images — Store transparent product shots as WebP to reduce shop load times.
  • Icon and illustration exports — Ship UI graphics with alpha at a lower byte cost.
  • Reducing gallery weight — Convert PNG-heavy galleries into WebP for faster browsing.

Limitations

  • Very old browsers may not render WebP without a PNG fallback.
  • The default encode is lossy; expect very slight perceptual differences.
  • One file per conversion, capped near 25MB.
  • Extreme flat graphics may see smaller gains than photographic PNGs.
